What Is Sociology?

The word sociology is a combination of two words: socius, a Latin word that means companion and a Greek word ology, which means the study of. All together, sociology is that branch of social science that studies society and social relations.

Definition:

"Sociology is the synthesizing and generalising science of man in all his social relationships." - Arnold Green

"It is a subject which deals with groups." - H.M. Johnson

"Society is a web of social relationships." - MacIver

"as the study of society, that is of the tissue or web of human interactions and inter-relations." - Prof. Ginsberg

"Sociology should be concerned not with actual societies, but with forces which knit the people together in a society." - Vierkandt
